GRI.D is the design research initiative of Danny Griffin, an ongoing investigation into bottom-up methods of assembly in the age of automation. GRI.D is an exercise in discovering design agency in a world of increasingly complex systems.
I approach architecture from a background in robotic fabrication and systems integration, experiences which have allowed me to see firsthand the entanglement of industrial technologies and everyday experience of space. This dichotomy imparted a deep fascination for how the tiniest details develop immense consequence at the scale of industrial and environmental systems. However, this experience also highlighted the pressing nature of current issues in the production of architecture at scale: advanced manufacturing investigations are inevitably bracketed between looming ecological catastrophe and impending labor automation.
